The
pie chart shows the percentage of same-sex couples in America who have children
in their households. Only 16% of couples
have a child in their home. That is just a fraction of the gay or lesbian
population. The main reason that this number is so small is because most states
do not allow a same-sex couple to adopt a child. While most people believe it
is the adoption agency who doesn’t allow gays or lesbians to adopt, it is actually
more in the adoptive mother’s hands. Especially in the south, the mother that
is giving her child up for adoption does not think that a same-sex couple is
suitable to care for a baby. The other part of the chart is those who do not
have children. 84% do not have children. However, it is not said if they want
children, but a large amount do. Most same-sex couple cannot do so because they
live in very religious areas, like South Carolina. In places like that it is
not social acceptable for there to be a same-sex couple in the first place, let
alone get married and adopt a child.
